The England manager Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Following Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his sadness that the Three Lions team did not receive greater encouragement from the home spectators during their impressive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his team showcase their good form, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the match. But, he was displeased with the mood at the iconic venue.
“We had one and a half sessions to prepare against a drilled team and we did very well,” Tuchel stated. “We could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth goals. There was little noise. There was no any energy from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad warranted better encouragement today.”
“I support this statement. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more support in periods where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It might have aided us to regain energy, but that’s football and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with supporters, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. Yet the decision was justified by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel explained. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his spot.”
Bellamy Seeks Improvement from Defeat
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who host Belgium in a important qualifying match on next week, improve after their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” the manager said. “I need to see where we are. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Ollie Watkins was taken off at the break after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
