Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Lineup Against Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a shock selection.

Recent Form Lead to Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international squad following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates

Recent performances suggest of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their top-order woes.

Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
